Route K and Old Plank Road Roundabout

The City of Columbia has proposed the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of West Route K and West Old Plank Road in order to improve the safety of the Route K corridor. Construction would be scheduled to start during the spring of 2025.

This roundabout is intended to slow the speed of traffic moving through the intersection by removing the conflicting turning movements present at the existing intersection. The proposed roundabout will remove the skewed angle where West Old Plank Road meets West Route K, aligning it with Maple Meadows Drive. In addition, the hill on Route K will be slightly lowered to improve sight distance coming into the west leg of the roundabout. The west entrance of the Little General gas station will also be reconstructed to line up with Vermillion Drive. Finally, a turn-around will be constructed at the end of the existing Old Plank Road in order to maintain access to the three existing properties.

The current design is for a single lane, 150-foot diameter roundabout with 5-foot sidewalks and splitter islands. The addition of sidewalks and crosswalks through the intersection will create a safer alternative for pedestrians to cross Route K to the gas stations and to the adjoining subdivisions. Construction of the roundabout will provide a long-term solution for the intersection in terms of safety and vehicle flow.

The project is being completed through the MoDOT Cost Share Partnership Funding Program, which creates a public partnership allowing multiple organizations to jointly complete a transportation project. Old Plank Road is maintained by the City and Route K is maintained by MoDOT, thus making the partnership possible. This cost share program allows MoDOT to commit funds to a project for proposed improvements not included in MoDOT’s 5-year plan, but which benefits the state system. As part of the partnership, the City will take the lead on the design and construction of the improvements and will also provide a 50 percent match of the funding.
