Consultation has concluded

The City of Columbia is excited to announce the development of a new Municipal Service Center. The City obtained this strategically located property Dec. 16, 2022, with the specific intention of bolstering Public Works services. Situated on a 16.9-acre tract of land just south of Mill Creek Elementary School near the intersection of West Nifong Boulevard and Sinclair Road, the center marks a significant milestone in our commitment to serving the community.

The purpose of the facility will be to enhance services provided by the City of Columbia Public Works department, allowing operations to occur in closer proximity to a greater portion of the City’s residents. The master concept plan for this facility includes a salt storage building, storage for snowplows and salt distribution equipment, vehicle parking, an office, electric vehicle charging stations and a refueling facility.

Currently, our Public Works department operates from two sites: the Grissum Service Center and the Salt Dome Facility. These two sites, however, are approximately 5.5 miles north of the new property. The planned Municipal Services Center will help to reduce existing winter weather response times, which can reach up to 2 1/2 hours due to having only a single salt storage facility. The design concept includes an emphasis on increasing renewable energy installations, reflecting the City’s commitment to reducing energy usage throughout its buildings.

In May 2023, the City engaged Klingner Associates, P.C., to provide professional planning and design consulting services. Together, we developed a comprehensive master plan that prioritizes sustainability and energy efficiency.

The City of Columbia Public Works department held an informal open house meeting concerning the development of the Municipal Services Center. The meeting was Wednesday, March 6, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Mill Creek Elementary School, 2200 W. Nifong Blvd.

At the open house, information and diagrams showing the design concepts were available for public review, City staff were available for questions and a public comment form was made available. Comments were also accepted on this website through Wednesday, March 20. All this input will be considered as the designs are developed.
