Recycling center on Oakland Gravel Road
The City of Columbia Solid Waste Utility would like to thank the public for giving us their input on a proposed recycling drop-off center on Oakland Gravel Road.
Solid Waste received a number of comments from citizens who are against constructing a recycling drop off facility at this location. Therefore, the Utility is not going to proceed with the project.
Staff will continue to look for other suitable City owned property that could be utilized for a recycling drop off facility.

Reuse area
Have a covered area set up for dropping off re-usable items that other residents can then take for free. This is something I used a-lot when living in Chatham County North Carolina. They had a place for kids toys, clothing, small appliances, and other random household stuff. While I no longer need this type of thing, it is very helpful for residents who cannot afford thrift stores and also for those like myself who prefer to directly give to those who might need it rather than donating to bloated controversial charities like Goodwill who just take our stuff and resell it at high prices so poor people can’t afford to thrift. It is also ideal for people striving to re-use first before recycling…recycling is ok but reusing is much more earth friendly and impactful.

Please consider other North COMO locations.
The traffic at the intersection of Vandiver & Oakland Gravel can already get congested at times. The addition of a drop-off center in this area could further congest the area. With the new sidewalks being put installed in this area - it has been implied that no add'l improvements to traffic flow in this area have been considered. North COMO does need a recycling drop off location. Perhaps it can be placed further north on Oakland Gravel Road.

DRIVE-IN / DROP-OFF | Give thought and consideration to how best to access the containers; back-in? drive straight in?
Multiple vehicles at one drop-off recycling center creates congestion when some people back-in to unload, while others pull straight-in to the location and unload. There is no sense of order when multiple vehicles are present and dropping off items for recycling.

This really isn't a novel idea, but doing what you are supposed to as a city might be a better course of action.

SITE CONSIDERATION / Oakland Gravel Road and Vandiver
While I don't disagree with the proposed location of this new northside recycling center, I do think that particular intersection gets a lot of traffic. Access and parking to unload recyclables will be very important. I heartily support a north location as I currently drive to Columbia College, or south of town to drop off recycling at the State Farm Road location, which is across town from me.
