The City of Columbia is going to upgrade the Armory Sports and Recreation Center (701 E. Ash Street). We want to make the building more comfortable, reliable, and energy-efficient for everyone who uses it.
What’s Changing?
We are focusing on four major upgrades to the facility:
Better Heating & Cooling: We are replacing three outdated systems that are past their prime. This means more consistent temperatures when you're visiting.
Modern Lighting: We’re upgrading the lights throughout the building to be brighter and more efficient.
Why Are We Doing This?
By replacing old equipment, the City isn't just making the building better—we’re saving money and helping the environment.
Cost Savings: These upgrades will save over $9,000 in energy costs in the first year alone and stop us from spending over $156,000 on constant repairs for the old machines.
Going Green: We expect to save a massive amount of electricity and natural gas. In fact, the carbon footprint we’re cutting is the same as not driving a gas car 1.74 million miles!
Construction Timeline:
Work is planned for October 2026 through January 2027. If any classes or programs need to be moved or paused, we will make sure to notify the public and regular Armory visitors well in advance.
We want to hear from you! Come by to see the design plans and ask questions.
When: Tuesday, April 21
Time: 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Where: Armory Sports and Recreation Center (Downstairs Classroom), 701 E. Ash Street.
