Consultation has concluded

The City of Columbia Solid Waste Utility would like to hear from the public regarding the proposed installation of a refuse compactor off Hitt Street.

The Utility is looking to replace an existing 8-yard refuse dumpster with a 14-yard refuse compactor just north of 207 Hitt St. The volume of refuse received at this location has increased to where the 8-yard dumpster no longer has adequate capacity.

The Solid Waste Utility has scheduled a public information meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4 in Conference Room 1C at City Hall, 701 E. Broadway. At the meeting, City staff will be on hand to answer questions.

Installing a 14-yard refuse compactor will increase the volume of refuse that can be received at this location. The compactor will be placed within the existing public right-of-way.

Work for this project includes the installation of electrical service and the installation and repair of pavement. Because of space limitations, Solid Waste is not proposing to install recycling containers at this location.

Public comments will be accepted on this page through Oct. 13.

This page will be updated throughout the life cycle of the project. Please check back for any updates.
