The City of Columbia is conducting investigations to check water service line material for lead as a part of the City’s Lead Compliance Program. To verify whether lead lines exist on private property, the City has launched an online Service Line Material Identification survey with easy-to-follow instructions to identify your service line material.
The Service Line Material Identification survey is the City of Columbia’s effort to achieve accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s latest revisions to the Lead and Copper Rule.
These revisions include requirements for utilities to create and maintain an inventory of water service lines in their service area and provide public education about the presence and effects of lead in drinking water.
A water service line is the pipe that connects a water main to an individual property. The portion leading from the water main to the meter is maintained by Columbia. The portion leading from the water meter to the residence is maintained by the property owner.
The City maintains records of the Utility-owned portion of the service lines, but the material of some of the customer-owned service lines are unknown. Completion of the survey can provide valuable information that will help the City of Columbia comply with the EPA's revisions.
The survey will require you to locate your water service line, perform a scratch test (using a coin or key) and a magnet test, and electronically submit a photo. This activity is anticipated to take approximately 15 minutes.
