Updated: A new preliminary roundabout design document has been added to the "Documents" section. This PDF contains a preliminary design concept for a proposed roundabout at the intersection of Providence Road and Blue Ridge Road. The drawing illustrates the overall shape and size of the proposed single-lane roundabout, the location of the center island, travel lanes, truck apron, 6-foot wide pedestrian crossings, sidewalks and roadway approaches. It also shows the relationship of the proposed roundabout to nearby streets, driveways, rights of way and surrounding properties, including the adjacent fire station. The drawing is intended to help residents visualize the proposed project and provide feedback during the planning process. The design is preliminary and may continue to be revised based on public input and engineering review.

The Documents section also includes an area map showing the location of the intersection in question.

New: An FAQ has also been added to the Documents section.

The City of Columbia Public Works department is planning improvements at the intersection of Providence Road and Blue Ridge Road. This intersection experiences significant traffic volumes and serves as an important connection for residents, businesses and visitors traveling through the area. After evaluating potential improvements, the City determined that a roundabout would improve traffic flow while enhancing safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

The proposed project would replace the existing intersection with a modern roundabout designed to reduce congestion and improve overall traffic operations. The project would also include pedestrian accommodations intended to improve accessibility and provide safer connections through the intersection area.

Community feedback is an important part of the design process. Residents and interested parties are encouraged to review the project information available on this page, including preliminary concepts and project materials, and submit comments for City staff to consider.

An informal open house meeting concerning the project was held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at Grace Bible Church, 601 Blue Ridge Road. City engineering staff was present to share project information and answer questions. Comments were accepted through July 1, 2026.

Members of the public may attend any open meeting. For requests for accommodations related to disability, please call 573.874.CITY (2489) or email City@CoMo.gov. In order to assist staff in making the appropriate arrangements for your accommodation, please make your request as far in advance of the posted meeting date as possible.

During the study process, several intersection improvement options were evaluated. A roundabout was selected because it is expected to improve safety, reduce severe crashes and maintain traffic flow more effectively than a traditional signalized intersection. The roundabout will also include a truck apron, which is a paved area around the center island designed to accommodate large vehicles such as fire engines, ambulances, school buses and other heavy vehicles.
