The City of Columbia Electric Utility is in the planning stages of a transmission line project. The project was first introduced to Council in September, 2009, when the Electric Utility brought to Council’s attention that Columbia needed new transmission lines and substations for the growing city. In April 2015, the Council approved the bond to fund the project, only for it to be put on hold in 2016 due to public concerns. A graphic showing the past timeline of this project can be found under the Documents tab on the right side of this page.
The transmission project was later brought up in work sessions with the council to discuss restarting it. In February 2026, the City Council approved the option for the transmission line project to connect from the Grindstone substation to the Perche Creek substation through Vawter School Road. The transmission line project will bring in new infrastructure to the ever-growing city of Columbia. This infrastructure includes new 161kV transmission lines as well as upgrades to existing substations. In addition to upgrading an aging infrastructure, the project helps ensure the Electric Utility can continue to provide reliable power to the residents of Columbia and our surrounding communities.
The City of Columbia Utilities hosted a pair of open-house-style public input meetings on Tuesday, August 11 to discuss and gain feedback on the transmission line project. This project was also the topic of the August Let's Talk Local hosted on Aug. 20. The presentation and handouts from these events are under the Documents tab on the right side of this page.
The City of Columbia Utilities is hosting a pair of open-house style public input meetings. The meetings will be held at two time slots giving residents more opportunities to provide feedback. The meetings will be held 1:30-3:30 p.m. and at 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026 in the lobby of the Forum Christian Church, 3900 Forum Blvd.
Members of the public may attend any open meeting. For requests for accommodations related to disability, please call 573.874.CITY (2489) or email City@CoMo.gov. In order to assist staff in making the appropriate arrangements for your accommodation, please make your request as far in advance of the posted meeting date as possible.
