At the Nov. 18, 2024, meeting, the Columbia City Council accepted the full award of grant funds from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for the Calvert Drive stormwater detention project.

The City of Columbia Sewer and Stormwater Utilities are working on stormwater drainage and sanitary sewer improvements at Calvert Lane, Sylvan Lane and Vandiver Drive.

The City of Columbia Stormwater Utility will replace eight stormwater inlets and existing pipe with 10 new inlets, six stormwater structures and approximately 2,080 feet of new stormwater pipe on Vandiver Drive and Sylvan Lane. The new stormwater system would drain to a proposed regional detention basin. Additionally, approximately 1,530 feet of new sanitary sewer pipe would be built to reroute the sanitary sewer out from under the building at 2510 Vandiver Drive.

The existing storm water system at Vandiver Drive is undersized; there are too few inlets to collect the amount of runoff to the area. This results in road flooding of a major arterial roadway. This improvement project will provide regional detention in the Hinkson Creek watershed by detaining the stormwater flow draining to Vandiver Drive and Sylvan Lane. The detention basin is designed primarily for channel protection (water quality) but also meets flood protection requirements.

At the Dec. 18, 2023, City Council meeting, the Council approved a partial grant agreement of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for work on the Calvert Drive Detention project. The grant was awarded through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for State Fiscal Recovery Funds in November 2022.

The total grant request for the Calvert Drive Detention project is $2,810,035.70, and the City's share is $590,107.50.
