The City of Columbia Solid Waste Utility has retained RRT Engineering to complete a feasibility study to further evaluate the Material Recovery Facility.
During a Council work session Jan. 22, 2024, the City Council directed staff to proceed with preliminary design process for constructing a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The MRF is at the end of its useful life and need to be replaced. Staff is looking into options of either constructing a new facility on the current site, constructing a new MRF on a different location at the landfill, or a combination of the two.
RRT will conduct an analysis to determine the best option before issuing a request for proposal for the design of a new facility.
RRT will provide a summary report, which will include conceptual schematics, budgetary costs, preliminary schedules, review of permit requirements, outline the risks, limitations and benefits for each option. The schematics will depict exterior traffic circulation, building sizes with allocation of spaces within the buildings and conceptual equipment layouts.
